TOPIC :Doing the things that are pleasing in His sight :HUMILITY.
“When I shut up heaven and there is no rain…if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray… I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land “. In this series we shall be looking one after another, at those things that are pleasing in the sight of God and their implications on Christian living, beginning with humility. Humility is defined as the quality of being without pride. It is also defined as voluntary self abasement. On the other hand, Pride is defined as excessive self esteem. Our text shows that humility is one of the conditions God requires to forgive the sin of His children, answer their prayers and bless them and their land. He revealed this to King Solomon during the dedication of the Temple. A humble person will immediately admit his mistakes either before men or God or both and apologize sincerely and unreservedly for such mistakes. While the humble remorsefully and penitentiarily admits his sins, the proud will arrogantly rationalize his sins and pass the buck like Adam and Eve(Gen3:12-13) and King Saul (1Sam15:20-21). God gives grace to the humble (James 4:6; 1Pet5:5-6). He will answer the prayers of the humble and lift them up in life (Luke 18-14). He will pardon the humble as He pardoned wicked Ahab who displayed rare humility (1Kings21:27-28). He will take over the battle of those who humble themselves before Him(2Chron12:5-7). Our LORD Jesus exemplified humility and as a result God the Father exalted Him and made Him LORD (Phil2:5-11). God hates pride (Prov6:17). Rehoboam lost ten tribes to Jeroboam due to pride (1Kings12:13-14). Nebuchadnezzar was humiliated by God because of pride (Dan.4). His son Belshazzar was rejected by God and died prematurely because of pride(Dan.5:22-30). Pride and haughtiness will lead to a fall and destruction (Prov.16:18-19). Humility is celebrated and rewarded positively by God but it is a scarce commodity among humans. I can’t forget a prominent leader of a Pentecostal church who vehemently rejected to dialogue with his followers and avoid an impending serious crisis because, according to him, “They have hurt my ego. They have hurt my pride. I can’t sit with them. I can’t talk with them “. This was pride at the highest level and the man was consumed. This was the same pride that ruined Lucifer who became Satan after being cast down by God,to be trodden by men (Isa.14:12-17). No one can be truly humble except he is genuinely born again and totally sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Ask yourself what makes you proud -education, wealth, family background, beauty, achievements, etc? All these and others come from God and often through human beings. So we must be humbled enough by these achievements to recognize God and men and give them their due respect and honour, otherwise those who lifted us up can throw us down. No sin is too much for God to forgive if we will truly humble ourselves, admit them and turn away from them. Happy Sunday and remain blessed this new week in JESUS’ Name.
